Jaffa
- Geography/History ~ ISRAEL & ITALY ~ (ancient name "Joppa") (since 1949, part of Tel Aviv-Jaffa) A city in Israel on the Mediterranean Sea. It is south of the mouth of the Hayarqon River and 35 miles northwest of Jerusalem. It is mentioned in the Old Testament as the border possession of the Tribe of Dan. Jaffa is also a city in northern Italy.
- The Show (Stargåte SG-1) ~ The Jaffa are the people who carry the larval Goa’uld (symbiote) in a marsupial-like pouch. The symbiote extends the life of its Jaffa and improves its immune system. Teal’c is a Jaffa (101 – Children of the Gods). A Jaffa must perform Kelno’reem, a mental state parallel to hibernation or very deep meditation, each day. When the Jaffa is in Kelno’reem their symbiote can access their subconscious mind, which allows it to repair or heal an injury or illness (217 – Holiday). In the deepest state of Kelno’reem, it is possible (but forbidden by the Goa’uld) to communicate with the symbiote. This communication is in the form of primitive images (404 – Crossroads). Teal’c is 101 years old (418 – The Light). The Jaffa Rebels have assembled on the planet they call “Cal Mah” (Jaffa for “sanctuary”). Warriors from Apophis, Cronus, Hathor, Heru’ur, Imhotep, Ra, and Seth are among the ranks. Kytano is the leader of this army. O’Neill becomes suspicious because Kytano is uses the same battle tactics the Goa’uld use: kill the enemy, take their army, and repeat. Teal’c becomes the leader of the rebel Jaffa after he battles Kytano/Imhotep to the death (called "Joma Secu") (518 – The Warrior). Teal’c’s wife, Drey’auc, is also a Jaffa. However, when her symbiote matured she refused to accept a new one and thus died at the rebel Jaffa outpost. She left her and Teal’c’s son, Rya’c in the care of Bra’tac, Teal’c’s mentor (601 – Redemption). They do not kill from behind. They believe in exacting vengeance face to face (609 – Allegiance). The Tok-ra have refined Tretonin (the drug made from ground-Goa’uld Symboites (see Egeria) by the Pangarians) to help free the Jaffa from their dependence on the Goa’uld Symboites acting as their immune systems (619 – The Changeling). Led by Ishta, there is a contingent of Amazonian Female Jaffa Warriors who are rebelling against Moloch. They are based on the planet Hak’tyl (Goa’uld for "Liberation") (710 – Birthright). The planet Dakara is the location of the Jaffa’s holy city and has a temple sacred to all Jaffa. It is also the location of the first prim'tah, the origin of the Jaffa. Within the temple is an Ancient device that can destroy all life in the universe. It is currently in Baal’s territory, however the rebel/free Jaffa faction recaptures it (816/817 – Reckoning). 5000 years ago, Ishkur’s Jaffa (the Sodan) realized that he was not a God. They rebelled and won their freedom. Recognized as traitors, they went in search of Kheb. However, they couldn’t find Kheb and relocated to an unnamed planet (P9G-844) once inhabited by the Ancients. They now follow the Ancients, whom they believe to be true gods. The rest of the Jaffas’ fate is of no concern to the Sodan. Lord Haikon is their leader. They are considering following the Ori (908 -- Babylon). The Sodan refuse the Ori. The Ori try to convert the Jaffa Free Nation, but fail (910/911 – The Fourth Horseman). Adria (See Ori) destroyed the Weapon on Dakara, and essentially the entire planet, thus ending the Free Jaffa Nation (1007 -- Counterstrike).

| Janus
- Myth ~ ANCIENT ROME (Ianua "gate/door") [Other names: Geminus ("Double"); Bifrons ("Two-Faced"); Quadrifrons ("Four-Faced")] The Roman god of gates, doors, beginnings, and endings. He represented all transitions in life. He was depicted as a man with a double-faced head, each looking in opposite directions. Originally, one face was clean-shaven while the other was bearded, which represented the sun and the moon. Later both faces were bearded. He holds a key in his right hand. With his first wife, the mortal Camese of Latium, he was the father of Tiberinus (God of the Tiber River). With his second wife, Juturna (Goddess of Wells and Springs; sister of Turnus, king of Rutuli), he is the father of Fontus or Fons (God of Wells and Springs). He was also married to Jana, a minor Roman goddess. He gave the nymph Carna power over door-handles and she became Cardea, goddess of thresholds and door-pivots. His son by her became a king of the city of Alba Longa. His festival was called the Agonalia (agonium: "Sacrificial Rites") and took place on January 9. As the first king of Latium, he brought the people a Golden Age. He pioneered cultivation of the fields, use of money, and made laws. The gates of his temples were kept closed in times of peace, and open in times of war so that he could intervene if necessary. His sanctuaries were doors on the Forum Romanum, a temple on the Forum Olitorium and a temple was built on the Forum of Nerva. January (Roman: Ianuarius) is named after him. He is compared to Ani, the Etruscan Sky-God, and Jumis, the Latvian Field/Fertility God. Janus did not have a Greek counterpart.
- The Show (Stargåte SG-1) ~ Janus probably built and used the time-machine-jumper that was found on the planet where Maybourne is now the king (Jumpers existed in the Milky Way before Atlantis left for Pegasus, so it might be from another, maybe those in Window of Opportunity (404).) He also was probably the one who left behind the prophecies. Daniel theorizes that the Ancient came to the planet to study the evolution of life on the planet. Daniel also says that the prophecies are only about 200 years old by looking at the weathering of the stone (813 – It’s Good To Be King).
- The Show (Stargate Atlåntis) ~ Janus is an Ancient who built a time machine. When the Atlantis Expedition first arrived on the city, the power was extremely low and the fail safe was not enacted. Sheppard and Dr. Zelenka find a unique Jumper that is outfitted with Janus’ time machine. To make a long story short, every one dies except Dr. Weir, who is sent back in time 10000 years. She finds that the Atlanteans are loosing against the Wraith and are about to flee to Earth. The Council forbade Janus to build the time machine, and when they learned he had, they forbade him from using it to send Dr. Weir back. Janus taught Dr. Weir how to rotate the ZPMs to extend the power and told her several planets that had extra ZPMs. He enacted the fail safe and then put Dr. Weir in suspended animation, where the SGA team found her 10000 years later (115 – Before I Sleep). One of his hidden labs (used for unauthorized research) is discovered on Atlantis by Jackson and McKay. There, they find the Attero Device. However, they are ambushed and captured by a gang of armored aliens, who force them to bring the device online (510/511 - First Contact/The Lost Tribe).

Jarlath
- Religion ~ IRELAND ~ Also known as Hierlath, St. Jarlath was born in Connaught, Galway about 445 and died around 540 AD. He was a member of the Conmaicne family, who were Irish nobility, and were one of the most powerful families in Galway during the time. He founded the Monastery of Cluain Fois, outside of Tuam and as such is the Patron of the Archdiocese there. He was the student of Saint Benen. At Cluain Fois, Jarlath also founded a school, which was famous for its educational standards. Jarlath taught Saint Brendan of Ardfert and Saint Colman of Cloyne there. Because Jarlath was extremely devoted (praying 300 times every day and 300 times every night) he was bestowed with the gift of prophecy. His feast day is June 6th. Learn about Tuam and Jarlath: Tuam County Galway Ireland.
- The Show (Stargåte SG-1) ~ Golon Jarlath, a Hebridan human with a bad attitude and bad personal hygiene, is the pilot of the Oran, and a weapons specialist. He was served time in the outer mining colonies for running illegal weapons. He is awe-struck by Carter (although isn’t just about every male alien?). His bad attitude prompts him to go without emergency reserves and instead adding extra weapons. It is learned that Muirios, another competitor, sabotaged many of the ships. Jarlath transmits a jamming signal to Muirios’ ship thus preventing him from wining (708 – Space Race).

Jonas Quinn
- Language ~ HEBREW (Old Testament) and ANCIENT ROME ~ Jonas is a Greek form of the Hebrew (Biblical) name Jonah (Hebrew: yonah "Dove"). He was sent to the Mesopotamian city of Nineveh and was swallowed by a fish/whale (he escaped unhurt three days later). ~ Quinn is the short form of the name Quintinus or Quintus, which was/is a first name that translates to “Fifth.” As with custom of the time, the fifth child was usually named this.
- The Show (Stargåte SG-1) ~ A native of the planet P2S-4C3, Jonas Quinn is the Special Advisor to the High Minister of Kelowna. He has earned several university degrees; two of which are: social studies and Ancient Kelownan history. The Kelownans discovered their Stargate and a substance called Naquadria (see Naquadah). The scientists of Kelowna thought that their civilization was marred by an asteroid impact some 10000 years ago. However, with the translation of the inscriptions on the walls of the newly excavated Goa’uld temple, they learned that testing of a Naquadria-powered weapon by the Goa’uld was responsible for the destruction. Jonas had been put in charge of supervising the research of the use of Naquadria to make a weapon of mass destruction from an ethical perspective. The government of Kelowna was experimenting with the Naquadria when SG-1 first met them, and this is what led to Jonas’ defection to Earth with a stolen supply of Naquadria and Daniel’s ascension (See Oma Desala). Because of Jonas’ actions he is now considered a traitor to his government and in exile on Earth (521 – Meridian). Jonas has been on Earth for three months. He has memorized almost all of Daniel Jackson’s work since he has the capability to learn much quicker than Earth humans and also possesses a photographic memory. He comes up with the idea to lift the Stargate up through the missile silo of the SGC, thus saving the Earth from Anubis’ evil plan (601/602 – Redemption). He can hold his breath under water for almost two minutes (603 – Descent). Dr. Kieran, a professor and researcher at Kelowna’s Academy of Science, was one of Jonas’ teachers at university. He recruited Jonas to work on the Naquadria project. Jonas had been working on the project with Dr. Kieran for six years before he left for Earth (607 – Shadow Play). It turns out that Nirty manipulated his DNA in the episode, Metamorphosis (616). She gave him the power to see the future. This ultimately resulted in a brain tumor, which threatened his life. A surgery performed by Dr. Frasier saved him (621 – Prophecy). In the plan to thwart Anubis, Jonas and Daniel sneak aboard his mothership. Anubis captures Jonas and tortures him for information and learns of Jonas’ homeworld and the Naquadria. Jonas helps fight Anubis’ Jaffa and becomes a hero when he helps save Langara from Goa’uld occupation (701/702 – Fallen/Homecoming). With Kelowna’s massive vein of Naquadria becoming unstable, Jonas comes back to the SGC to seek help (714 – Fallout).
